Middle managers coaching employees in Greece: Are they committed or coerced?

Title: Middle managers coaching employees in Greece: Are they committed or coerced?
Authors: Kapsali, Alexandra
Abstract: The purpose of this research is to assess the level of commitment of middle
managers on coaching their employees, after being trained by an external
certified coaching program. Furthermore, it is important to understand the
reasons that facilitate or prevent middle managers from applying their coaching
skills and to collect their reported suggestions for improvement. For this reason
the thesis has examined the case of an organization's middle line managers. The
organization is Piraeus Port Authority SA, a leading company in Greek ports. The
sample is made out of 9 middle line managers who took part on in-depth
interviews. The outcome of the research indicates that they have a high level of
commitment and they are willing to participate on the coaching process. Overall,
the working climate is positive for the coaching process and it gives value on the
company.

Managing autonomy and control: Enhancing team agility through effective governance

Title: Managing autonomy and control: Enhancing team agility through effective governance
Authors: Touli, Eliza
Abstract: This dissertation explores the complex link between team governance and team agility. The idea of team agility, which originated in software development, has typically been associated with independent self-managed teams. This study supports the argument that in other team environments, agility is fostered by striking a balance between the opposing forces of autonomy and control, the two primary forces influencing team governance. Through qualitative research involving in-depth interviews with managers and team members from the service sector, this study seeks to unravel the nuanced perspectives surrounding the autonomy-control dilemma. The qualitative data acquired from these interviews is examined to find patterns, themes, and insights that illuminate their interplay. The results of this study shed light on the complex nature of team governance and offer valuable guidance for managers trying to strike a balance between autonomy and control, ultimately enhancing their team’s agility.
